Healthy Tips for the Holiday Season!

As we approach the holidays filled with laughter and joy we also look forward to the holiday meals! It is easy to eat our way through the day and end the evening in a ‘food coma’. Below are some tips to navigate the holiday feast:

  1. Don't skip meals! Saving your appetite and skipping meals for the holiday meal may result in overeating. Have a balanced breakfast and lunch before heading over to the holiday feast.

  2. Have a plan to avoid overeating! Before grabbing your plate, survey the buffet and sides. Next, fill half your plate with salad and veggies. Then add the entree and sides!

  3. Veggies first! Now that you have your plate filled with yummy food items, eat your veggies and salad first. They are nutrient dense and full of fiber.

  4. Eat what you love!  If you have something on your plate that looked better then it tasted,  leave it and move on. Don't feel obligated to finish all items on your plate, especially the ones you are not calling you. Eat what your enjoy!

  5. Keep moving! Grab a guest and walk around the block, or play music for a dance party or a game of 'Simon Says' before diving into the desserts. This will allow time for your body to tell your brain that it may be full and can start digesting the holiday meal.

  6. Stay Hydrated! Enjoy the holiday EggNog, Spiced Cider, and the wine because some the best conversations happen around the bar. BUT don't forget to drink a glass of water before or after every bar beverage. It will help with digestion, limit the bloating from the sodium filled entree and limit the amount of added sugars from the holiday celebration.

  7. Nourish! Nourishing your belly is part of the fun but don't forget to nourish your heart. Leave the electronic devices to the side and live in the moment.  Enjoy the conversations with the young and old, create memories and you will leave the celebration feeling complete and fully nourished.

Have a Nourished Holiday Season!
