National Nutrition Month '18 Challenge

Today, March 1st is the first day of National Nutrition Month. It is a campaign created annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The goal is to make informed and understand the importance of food choices, eating habits and physical activity habits. This month also reminds and encourages us to aim for optimal health.

"Go Further with Food" is the theme for 2018, which has many meanings- reduce food waste, starting the morning off with breakfast, nourishing your body pre/post workouts, eating at the dinner table as a family and connecting in the moment with good conversation. This year I have challenged my children (including myself) to incorporate one more serving of fruit or vegetable each day. How are we going to do that? We decided to either incorporate fruit or vegetable as part of our afternoon snack. Below are some ideas:

  • cucumbers & hummus
  • carrots & ranch dressing
  • celery & nut butter
  • bell pepper slices & hummus
  • steam broccoli and cheese
  • apple slices & nut butter
  • peaches or pineapple with cottage cheese
  • berries with plain Greek Yogurt
  • banana & nut butter
  • unsweetened dried fruit and nuts
  • smoothies made with fruit and a handful of spinach

Or it could just be a simple bowl of cut up fruit- berries, kiwis, mangos. The options are endless! Remember, it can fresh or frozen. If using canned, just drain and rinse.

In return, my son challenged me to a 30-day plank challenge, yikes! We going old school and maintaining our paper trail. Don't worry folks, I will keep you updated on our progress!

What challenge are you up to?
